     A set of films, mysterious, some orphaned, from a stash from the Center Cinema Coop, based in Chicago from 1968-1978.  It's unknown whether any of these have ever played in Los Angeles before.  Presented by one maker, Thomas Baum, and Josh B Mabe.

    Malcolm Le Grice: Before and After Cinema

    The first of a few shows with UK legend Malcolm Le Grice for his first California screenings in decades!  Designated by the British Film Institute as “probably the most influential modernist filmmaker in British cinema,” Malcolm Le Grice achieved global significance in the 1970s as the doyen of the group of filmmakers centered on the London Filmmakers’ Coop.

    One of the most compellingly original and radical artist-theorists in the history of the post-war moving image, Le Grice has been innovating at the center and the fringes of time-based media for over fifty years, embracing and exploring the signification of images, multiple projection, and the materiality of media. A second evening, at USC.

    This program at Los Angeles Filmforum will span the full length of Malcolm Le Grice’s career thus far, from his first 8mm film China Tea (1965) to a world premiere new edit of his immersive multi-screen piece FINITI (2010), which combines abstract, observational, political, and personal material in an impressionistic and hypnotic homage to Vertov.

    In our screening with Josh Mabe on January 18 of some Chicago favorites, we were blown away by the film Remembrance: A Portrait Study, by Edward Owens, previously unknown to us.  In response, we’ve decided to screen all three of Owens’s films currently in distribution! Wens was a queer Black artist who made a small set of films in Chicago and New York, but by 1971 gave up filmmaking.  Come see these beautiful films, all made before Owens was 21.

    Filmforum welcomes back filmmaker Jim Finn with LA premieres of two of his latest indefinable humorous experimental works, along with two golden not-so-oldies.  "Steeped in the obsolete language of revolutionary art," The New York Times said Jim Finn's films "often play like unearthed artifacts from an alternate universe."

    Artist Babette Mangolte returns in person for a second night of films that further explore the range of her artistic output. Since the 1970s Mangolte has filmed and photographed dance and performance, in many cases producing documents that have become primary in the recollection and retelling of these works. Mangolte’s work captures the process and performance of dance, the dailiness of practice and the rigor and poetry of the form.
