NOTE THE CHANGE IN OUR USUAL DAY AND LOCATION.

For the past forty years, Saul Levine has been making films and teaching in Boston – one might say that there wouldn’t be an alternative and underground film community in Boston without his total commitment to adventurous programming. In 2002, Saul started making videos in a series called ‘Driven (Boston After Dark)’. He describes these 16 pieces as ‘80 minute long tapes, shot without stopping while driving around Boston after dark with the driver talking and driving while I shoot.’ Veggiecloud will present the Los Angeles premiere screening of one of these pieces, ‘Driven (Boston After Dark): Joe Gibbons’, a rare portrait of Saul’s longtime friend, recently incarcerated artist Joe Gibbons. This piece will be preceded by another world premiere, this of a shorter work, ‘Dream Lover Dream’, which was also shot in a car driving around Boston, but during the daytime. The screening will be followed by a Q+A session with artist Matthew Doyle.

Co-presented by Los Angeles Filmforum

“I am interested in how people speak and how they look when they are thinking about what to say. As someone who once couldn’t speak at all, I am driven as a film/video maker to be a medium for others speech. This has been the impetus for much of my recent work in video.” – Saul Levine

A program of Saul’s film work will be presented on Super-8 after sunset at Chin’s Push on Wednesday, August 26th. Saul will be in attendance at both screenings.

“Saul Levine is the foremost dissenting filmmaker in America. With about 35 years of consistent production behind him, and no signs of fatigue, he can show us the shape of a life passionately and uncompromisingly devoted to filmmaking. His works are high-energy messages of friendship, records of sexual love and political activism, radiated by humor, prophetic anger, loneliness and even though rarely, representing repose. His incessant, chaotic outpouring of political energy seems less geared to a naïve notion of bettering the world than to a perpetual pressure to keep it from getting worse.” — P. Adams Sitney.

Programs curated by Matthew Doyle.

Dream Lover Dream

2015, DV, 12min.

Los Angeles Premiere!

Every night I hope and pray
A dream lover will come my way
A girl to hold in my arms
And know the magic of her charms
'Cause I want (yeah-yeah, yeah)
A girl (yeah-yeah, yeah)
To call (yeah-yeah, yeah)
My own (yeah-yeah)
I want a dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone

Dream lover, where are you
With a love, oh, so true
And the hand that I can hold
To feel you near as I grow old
'Cause I want (yeah-yeah, yeah)
A girl (yeah-yeah, yeah)
To call (yeah-yeah, yeah)
My own (yeah-yeah, yeah)
I want a dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone

Someday, I don't know how
I hope she'll hear my plea
Some way, I don't know how
She'll bring her love to me

Dream lover, until then
I'll go to sleep and dream again
That's the only thing to do
Till all my lover's dreams come true
'Cause I want (yeah-yeah, yeah)
A girl (yeah-yeah, yeah)
To call (yeah-yeah, yeah)
My own (yeah-yeah, yeah)
I want a dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone

Dream lover, until then
I'll go to sleep and dream again
That's the only thing to do
Till all my lover's dreams come true
'Cause I want (yeah-yeah, yeah)
A girl (yeah-yeah, yeah)
To call (yeah-yeah, yeah)
My own (yeah-yeah)
I want a dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone

Please don't make me dream alone
I beg you don't make me dream alone
No, I don't wanna dream

"I met Luke at a Harmony Korine show. He told me about his dream lover I asked him if we could make this video and around a year later we did." - Saul
