Animators Part II: Distant Passages
Hosted by Christine Panushka
Filmforum is delighted to host the immensely talented and inspirational
animator Christine Panushka. Currently teaching animation at USC, Panushka
creates work that is known internationally. Her impact in the greater
animation community of southern California cannot be overestimated, with
her guidance and skills serving as key elements in the success of the
Cal Arts and USC animation programs in recent years. Tonight she is hosting
a series of works by other filmmakers that she feels are worthy of greater
attention, in a program that she calls "Distant Passages."
Animation proves to be a medium that can intimately convey the most powerful
of human emotions and the most complex ideas. As we move into the digital
age, the arts are discovering the power of invented motion through the
discrete manipulation of individual images, that when viewed as a whole,
bring the elements of time, rhythm and movement to those images. This
is the magical power of animation.
The animated films selected for this screening are filled with longing,
a visible yearning for home, youth, peace, better times, acceptance, and
love. Within their images they challenge our imaginations to remember,
to dream, and to journey to unexpected places and states of mind.
Tonight's screenings include:
Roost by Amy Kravitz
Return by Katalin Nivelt
Grace by Lorelei Pepi
Glass Crow by Steven Subotnick
Residual Artifacts by Richard Sandoval
Chestnuts Icelolly by J.J. Villard
Indefinable Moods by Kathy Smith
Woman in the Attic by Chansoo Kim
Across the Fields by
Jerzy Kucia
